Zero Recall The Legend of ZERO Book 2 eBook Sara King
Sara King doesn't mess around. She gets right to the action, right into the story and slams the reader right into the future universe she created in which earth has been invaded, subjugated and forced to integrate into Congress, a league of worlds so diverse and complex that humans are just a minor player. King's protagonist is Joe Dobbs, who was recruited or forced into service as a kid into the Congies, or congressional army. The first book in the series is all about how Joe deals with the intensity of becoming a soldier when every other life form is tougher and more bloodthirsty than the soft humans. This second installment "Zero Recall" picks up the story of Joe Dobbs 53 years later. He's been a soldier the entire time. Now he's an old guy, still kicking because of technological advances provided by the alien races that belong to Congress. Dobbs returns to earth to find the brother he saved from going to war. But mostly he finds himself in a bottle, wallowing in self pity. King lets this part of the book drag a bit, but she does it to make a point and set up the rest of the novel. Joe really has nothing to live for. And his brother turns out to be some sort of notorious criminal. The two don't get to connect before Joe's redrafted into the army after a planet is blown to pieces and the Dhasha have decided to break with Congress. The Dhasha are a nasty but powerful and brilliant race of dragon-like beings that have natural near-impenetrable armor, making their demise very difficult. Joe is teamed with various alien beings to root out the rogue Dhasha on a planet where they've made a stand. The assault results in massive losses for the Congies, but Joe and his crew find a way to work together. The characters and dialogue is fascinating. King has a real ability to travel in directions the reader cannot easily predict. Meanwhile she plots intrigue in a secondary plot that pulls all the pieces together. There's a major play going on and Joe's simply a puzzle piece. He's not anything special. Yet, he's important beyond measure. King makes this the best part of her story. An old soldier holds the fate of the known universe in his hands. And the action is nothing short of totally intense. This is among the best military science fiction I've read. In fact, King is so intense and her stories so graphic and personal that I've got to take them in moderation. Not that I'm going to pay attention this time. I will read the next installment very soon. Maybe that has something to do with the Alaska thing. I remember being a kid in Fairbanks on cold days, stoking the wood stove and day dreaming some super weird stuff back then.Tags : Zero Recall (The Legend of ZERO, Book 2) - Kindle edition by Sara King. Zero Recall The Legend of ZERO Book 2 eBook Sara King Reviews
Did I like it? Yep! Do I recommend it? Yep! I wish all my friends were reading it too. It they were, we would be speaking the language in the book. It's hard to laugh and enjoy something this good and then try to explain it to someone else. People can appreciate the humor of the situations that I'm laughing at unless they have read the book. The characters and the relationships are that complex. Until you understand a Sentinel, a top Vaga assassin, a baga, and how they interrelate, you can't begin to appreciate the situations in this book.
This is really great writing. You get to see the characters personalities, their flaws, their failures, and their internal struggles. If you put this book down, it will be because you can't keep your eyes open. Or because you have looked at the clock and realized that you MUST be awake and alert at work tomorrow, and you only have a couple of hours left to grab some sleep.
Zero Recall is one of those books where you get to the end and you have to do a double take. Pieces of information fall into place and you're left wanting to read the entire book again (and maybe even the end of Forging Zero). As the author states, she hopes it will blow your mind, and it does.
It's not just the super, amazing, mind-blowing ending that makes this book rock though. The interaction between alien species is believable in its execution, and at times heartbreaking, at times hilarious.
I'll say one thing. Sara King really knows how to carry you along through emotional roller coasters. There are really low lows, and you think you will never recover. You never QUITE recover to fairy-tale-happpy-ending status. But you do find that it was all worth it. Because you care about her characters. They are real. They could be sitting next to you on the couch while you're reading, elbowing you at 2am, and saying, "Eh, eh?! Don't go to sleep yet, wait'll you find out what I did next."
This book is truly a masterpiece.
So i finished this book about 10 days ago and am still thinking through it! I loved the depth and complexity of book 2. I will say I read the Moldy Dead first, which provided a lot of context for both background and one off the principal characters - Forgotten. Please read it first, it's short and will take you 45 min or an hour, but lays so much of the ground work for Zero Recall.
I loved the intricacy of the characters and plot lines. Sarah really wove a deep book that's enjoyable at first read as much ad it will be after the fourth! What appear as slow moments aren't - they're crucial twists in the plot or setting up several future scene.
This book also has humor! Several times I had to pause from laughing so hard. This book is much lighter in tone than Zero 1. just in case you were thinking of skipping because of how gritty the first book was, don't!
I'm excited for the next one!
