Wake Me When the Sun Goes Down Forged Bloodlines Book 1 eBook Lisa Olsen

Remember the first time you met Sookie Stackhouse? She was sunny, her internal monologue was sharp, and she fell head first into a world of supernatural shenanigans. She kept defying the external expectations various supernatural communities placed on her, mostly because of her ingenuity and stubborn refusal to sell herself short. She was likeable, wasn't whiny, wasn't a badass ninja fighter, but still used what she had to get out of sticky situations.

Anja is that kind of character. I'm reading book #4 of this series right now, and I want to tell you all -- DO IT. Pick it up and READ THIS SERIES.

Here are it's strengths:

1. It's well-written. Granted, it's not what I'd call "literature-quality" where the prose reads like poetry (that'd be the Charley Davidson books for those of you who want a UF experience like that). But it's also not sloppy. It's good, solid prose. You won't find yourself cringing at terrible word choices and embarrassingly bad phrasing (as so often happened in the Sookie Stackhouse novels).

2. The heroine is upbeat, even when Bad Things Happen. So few urban fantasy or paranormal romance books give us an upbeat heroine. They're usually deeply scarred and/or emotionally volatile and whiny.

3. The heroine can be a badass, but only in a realistic way. She's like you or me or the girl next door. She has no intense work out regime, no latent sword wielding kung fu. She's just a regular girl who finds herself discovering and growing into her powers as the series progresses.

4. The stories have romance, but it's not so canned. When I read the first novel, I was afraid that she'd end up with the first guy she fell in love with and each story would just show their relationship progressing (kinda like Cat & Bones). That's not how this series is set up. In this way, she's definitely like Sookie, who had her fair share of suitors and slow-build romance (even if all of us did root for Eric). It'll be interesting to see how it all ends for Anja, but for now I like the unpredictability of it. Isn't that how real life is? Do any of us really walk through life with it all mapped out for us?

5. The heroine grows. That's right. Her character actually progresses. She's not stuck in a perpetual, formulaic rut (ahem, Stephanie Plum, ahem). Instead, she's more like an early Anita Blake -- always learning, acquiring new skills and responsibilities, her world ever expanding.

6. The heroine is not immature. She's an adult. She begins the series as a college student, so she is definitely young. But at least there's no eye-rolling professions of undying love from a fifteen year old here.

7. The mysteries are fun and personal. Yes, people die. It's serious business. But the mystery of the first book, for example, is "Who's Anja's sire?" The mystery of the second is "Who's targeting Anja?" So it's not like some books where the mysteries are all external to the heroine -- a series of strange murders in town, a rash of fires, etc. She's involved in these mysteries, invested in them. They're basically ABOUT her and the people in her life. While that's not always pulled off well in UF novels, it's done well in this series (so far), and that's what makes it fun for me to read.

In other words, this is the kind of series YOU WILL LOVE.

The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because I'm picky like that. I save my 5 stars for books that are over-the-top-unbelievably-good. Maybe that's not fair, given just how readily people throw 1 star reviews out there just because they bought a copy and the cover arrived bent. But, it's how I roll.

This series is good, no doubt. The books are enjoyable. What more can I say?

Wake Me When the Sun Goes Down Forged Bloodlines Book 1 eBook Lisa Olsen Reviews

This book is magnificent!!! I fell in love with it before I even finished the first chapter. The story catches your attention right off the bat and prevents you from being able to put the book down. Lisa Olsen did an incredible job at developing her characters for this book. The main character Anja (An-ya), is completely relatable. She is like the typical girl next door that almost every girl can connect with one way or another. I love how she isn’t this character who has a crazy workout route and spars with swords on her time off. She is a typical bookworm, she prefers reading books in comfy pjs instead of going out every night drinking and partying. I connected a lot with this character because we are almost 100% the same, I even have glasses like she used to have before she turned. I also love how she slowly started growing a stronger backbone after she started embracing her vampirism.

Now, time for me to stop going off about how much I love Anja. This book has a lot of amazing qualities to it that makes it so magnificent. The writing was well done and there were little to no grammatical errors. It was not sloppy by any means and the story progress at the perfect rate, it wasn’t too fast or too slow. The book also provided us with a heroine who remained upbeat no matter what was happening. I loved this, I also loved how Lisa Olsen gifted us with a heroine who wasn’t whiny. Nothing worse than a whiny heroine. Lastly, the book actually showed us Anja and Bishop’s relationship grow and develop. They didn’t fall madly in love with each other within a couple seconds of meeting each other and were automatically a couple. I prefer watching a couple grow, I’m not a big fan of the whole love at first sight thing.

I love Lisa Olsen’s take on vampires and how the book is more realistic than most. I love it so much because all of the characters are relatable and can be found in real-life. I truly can’t wait to get my hands on the other books to this series. I recommend this book for all of my fellow bookworms out there who want a main kick ass female character to fall in love with. Go get this book! Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Review By Angelina Daniel
I don't write customer reviews. I don't normally think that I have an opinion that requires me to write a customer review for books, movies, or other products. I either like them, or I don't.

This series is too amazing. It deserves to be gushed about. This review won't do it justice, but perhaps it will help change the mind of one buyer that is on the fence.

I'd never heard of Lisa Olsen before Tuesday when suggested I should try Wake Me When the Sun Goes Down. It's Thursday morning and I just bought the next two in the series, and her Angel series. The upcoming Demon Hunter books? I've never been so excited for an unwritten series.

So, let this be a lesson to others - listen to when they give you a random author based off your previous purchases. My love of authors like Kim Harrison and Brandon Sanderson led me, happily, to Ms. Olsen.
