This is an engaging new world Melissa Good has created. Sure, the world-building doesn't stand up under great scrutiny (why would global cooling from volcanic particulate matter in the atmosphere _raise_ the sea levels, how could the sea rise many hundreds of meters when you only get a 65m rise if _all_ the ice on Earth melts, etc.). But that's not what we're here for. We're here a good tale: some gripping action, some wrestling with the idea of humanity, and lots of romance. The leads will be familiar to anyone who's read Good's other work, but they _are_ certainly different from Xena & Gabrielle or Dar & Kerry. Comfortable similarities, but new characters. However, don't buy this book. Go to Good's website (Merwolf's Cave) and download it in your preferred format, and then donate a bit of money to Good (Paypal link on her "mobile formats" page). I waited for over a year after this book was complete for it to be officially released by the publisher, only to discover that it's almost unedited. I think they ran a spellcheck, and that's it. Good's many punctuation mistakes are still there, including her inability to ever distinguish between "it's" and "its" (she's an awesome storyteller, but sucks at punctuation - she's now worse than random chance with it's/its). And of course this book is only the first part of the story, which leaves you hanging. The entire story was complete in June 2012, and given the complete lack of editing, there's no excuse for not releasing it all at once.

I liked this book!
Seriously, this book has such a great romance aspect! There's an intimate scene or three, but it's not erotic, if that's a concern. I thought that the relationship between the main characters was fantastic and hilarious. They make a great team and I love how much they grow to trust and respect each other. I thought that with one being a robot, the relationship would seem odd, but with the exception of a quirky and literal personality, it's almost hard to even notice that she isn't human. The book was almost obnoxiously long, but well worth it because a lot happens to keep you interested and excited!
Definitely worth a read of you are interested in a post apocalyptic novel with incredible lesbian leads!
I will admit that I enjoyed the two books enough to read them through twice. I hope Ms. Good continues her foray into science fiction. Partners has a very interesting story line and Melissa Good did a good job on developing her characters and their relationships. Dev is a fascinating individual and an excellent counterpoint to Jess. The future world that the author built was well-detailed and extremely interesting. The only criticism I have is that it was difficult for me to pick up the slang references the characters were using. I think a short glossary might have helped but that's just my opinion. I also think the book could have been edited a little tighter. But all in all, it was thoroughly enjoyable. I know the books were split because it is a very long story, and worth the length, but you have to read both books... otherwise the first book has no ending. I would also like to see a follow up story concerning the future of the Bio Alts. I think there are more stories to be told in this future world.
I love all of Melissa Good's books and this new Science Fiction Series just proves she can excel in any genre. I really like how the relationship develops between Jess and Dev considering that Dev is an artificially created Bio. It is also fun to watch Dev discover all the differences in on-planet existence versus the life she had known in the space station. There is lots of action and the first battle was so well described that I was holding my breath hoping the main characters would survive. There is a good solid plot with lots of unexpected twists. This is a book to read and re-read, as are all of Ms Good's books. If you like good science fiction action/adventure with well-developed characters and an engaging plot, you'll certainly enjoy this book.
I first read a story by Melissa Good 20 years ago on her Xena fan fiction site, her writing stood head and shoulders above most other fan fiction that I found and I have read everything she has produced since then. her stories are well thought out and well crafted. Partners 1 introduces us to a world that has been devastated by natural disasters and continues to try to destroy what little the surviving humans have eked out over generations. Add to that a never ending fight for resources and technology and you have the makings of a very interesting novel. Having recently been betrayed by her partner on a mission to retrieve or destroy the advances made by the other side, Jesslyn Drake falls into a web of intrigue when she returns and takes on a bio-engineered being, Dev, as her new partner. The ups and downs of their missions and budding relationship keep the pages turning until the end. I have recently finished Partners 2, which continues the story to a very surprising and fulfilling conclusion.
Finally got my wife to read Melissa's body of work last year, she tore through them all and we await the next adventure together.
